چکیده
This paper describes the fabrication and operating principles of a reconfigurable diffraction grating based on a microfluidic device. Ž . The device consists of an array of microscopic channels 50 mm wide and 20 mm deep defined by the conformal contact between a transparent elastomeric material that has an embossed surface relief and a flat glass substrate. The microchannels can be filled reversibly Ž . with fluids gas, aqueous solutions, or organic solutions . The difference in index of refraction between the fluid in the array of microchannels and the structural elastomeric solid generates a difference in the phase of the light passing through the device; absorption by the fluid changes the amplitude of the light. Both of these effects give rise to diffraction. The gratings are reconfigured by pumping liquids with different indices of refraction and optical densities through the microchannels. In these experiments, the devices exhibited maximum depths of modulation of ;20 dB and switching times of ;50 ms; the volume of liquid sampled by the incident light was Ž . about 8 nl. The potential application of these devices as sensing elements in micro total analysis systems mTAS and as actuators is evaluated. q 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Elastomeric binary phase gratings for measuring acceleration, displacement, strain, and stress
This article describes the fabrication and operating principles of a device suitable for measuring displacements, stresses, strains, accelerations, and forces. The device consists of an elastomeric material with a surface relief diffraction grating embossed on its surface. Mechanical compression of this element changes the way that it diffracts light. This article also describes designs and per...
متن کاملFlowing lattices of bubbles as tunable, self-assembled diffraction gratings.
We demonstrate tunable, fluidic, two-dimensional diffraction gratings based on a microfluidic platform comprising a flow-focusing bubble generator and flowing, regular lattices of bubbles formed by dynamic self-assembly. The structure of these lattices can be tuned with switching times of less than ten seconds by changing the pressures and rates of flow applied to the device. These diffraction ...
متن کاملElastomeric Optics
This paper describes optical components prepared using poly(dimethylsiloxane) elastomers and liquid metals as constituent materials. Most optical components are fabricated from rigid materials such as glass, rigid polymers, or metals. By contrast, the elastomeric optics described here are designed to be deformable. Because the structure of the optical surface can be deformed easily, a single el...
متن کاملDevelopment of Elastomeric Optofluidic Devices for Lasing and Sensing
The term of optofluidics defines an emergent research field that combines microfluidics and optics. In many lab-on-a-chip applications, these two technologies are used in combining the microfluidics for sample delivery and optics for sensing and controlling. Optofluidic represents the implementation of optics in microfluidic platform that produces an unprecedented level of integration. Moreover...
متن کاملWave-front engineering by use of transparent elastomeric optical elements.
We describe a class of devices based on elastomeric optical phase gratings. These devices operate by reversibly controlling the phase of transmitted or reflected light by mechanical compression of the transparent elastomer. An optical modulator and an element in an optical display demonstrate two possible applications.
